Film inspiration

This film is called Into The Wild. this film inspired us as its all about one person travelling on their own as they don't like reality and will do anything to get away from it. We like the idea from this photo as it is a good picture to show him travelling with all of his belongings. We want to show our character travelling with all of her things too, but she'll be travelling through streets not the wild, but we want her to be walking through all different things to show she'll travel anywhere to get away from where she
came from.

This picture is a great shot as it shows the audience that the character hasn't got anywhere to go so they will literally sleep/stay wherever they can. This shot is him on top of an abandoned van, in our video we will change this to our character sleeping on a bench or something like that just to let the audience know she hasn't got much else. When we video her sitting on something higher, we want her to be admiring the scenery that she can see so we can tell she loves where she is and that she finds comfort in it.

We love this shot as it shows the main character from the movie doing something he admires in a place that he loves, this inspired us to do this in our music video with our main character. We want her to be sat somewhere alone, reading also so it shows the audience that she has a peace of mind where she is and that she is relaxed and happy. In the shot we want to capture a good part of the scenery to so we can fully portray her happiness now that she is alone and far away from her home.

In our music video we want a shot exactly like this where it shows a closeup of the characters face to try and show all of the emotion they have. In our case we want our charcter to be looking out to an open field or scenic area and have tears in her eyes to show that she feels like she is where she belongs. We want this shot to be at the very end of the video, so we can show her looking a little scruffy from where she has been travelling for days, but we want her to be smiling and feeling like shes finally got to where she has always wanted.

Film inspiration

We have got some of our inspiration for the storyline and the feel of the music video from films. One of the big films that have helped us realise what sort of story and shots that we want in our project is 'On The Road'

This is one of the shots from the film that is good for what we want to show in our music video as it shows the main character walking along the train track with their luggage to show to the audience that they are travelling. We are also inspired by the way he is wearing dark clothing at the same time as the sun shining and making the location within the scene look bright and cheerful.

The light behind the main characters head in the this shot with the sun setting is a shot that we want to recreate for the ending of our music video as it shows the emotion as we want the camera to turn to face her and for her to smile with the sun shining behind her as it sets and then the music video ends. We feel this would be a good ending as it shows that she is happy in her own little way and she is at her happiest when she is travelling, alone.

This scene from 'On The Road' is perfect for our music video as we ant our main character to meet people on her journey that show her happiness. Her dancing would be a good shot to have with people as it is when people are at their happiest. The people around her shows that she is comfortable with them as she is able to dance and let go in front of them. Her dancing on her own shows that for that moment she is the centre of attention as well as her being alone even in the happiest of times to some extent.

This shot from the film is something we want to portray in our music video as is focuses on the emotion of the main character which is a big part of our project because of the song and our storyline. Showing how she is feeling throughout the music video at different points and in different situations she is put in within it helps the audience to know how her emotion changes within the stages so that the viewers feel the same way and get more of a vibe from it.

The scene from 'On The Road' where there is a close up of a women laughing is a shot that we want to show in our music video project. We want to show her happiness every stage that she smiles or laughs to really emphasis upon it as this is a big factor in our music video, her emotions and the change in it with different people and surroundings.

Budget

For big organisations to create music videos, costs isnt much of a problem, however how video is a very low budget film which makes some of our ideas very hard to do causing us to have restrictions. Because of the restrictions we have, this has made us look more deeply into what exactly it is that we want that we can afford and is possible for us to do. Fortunately we have a good digital bridge camera and tripod to record our music video therefore this is quite a bonus instead of using the school camcorders which arent quite as good as we would like them to be. Originally we wanted to film our main character in different places all over the UK however due to the budget this wouldnt be likely for us to do, therefore we have looked at and chosen new locations which are within walking or biking distance, making it easier and affordable for ourselves. The only costs that we will need to work on are train ticket.

Moodboard

We had looked into existing music videos and found a numerous of shots that we are interested in using, with this we have created a moodboard of shots and scenes that have inspired us. They all have one thing in common, and that's travelling. They all include some form or another of movement. We aim to make our shots in our video to be unforgettable, things that are going to stay in their memory. We want to feature quite a few close ups of the main characters face in order to express and focus on their emotions. We will include different emotions to show her ups and downs.

The start f the video is going to be in her bedroom that is quite messy and child-like to create the illusion that they are a poor family so they haven't been able to decorate in a while. We want her travelling around the country. We have a shot on the train within the mood board which is another shot that we are going to recreate along with the handheld effect in some takes to show her filming her journey and when she meets people to show her happiness more clearly and more close up without filming all steady shots of her face that become tiring to the eye for the audience of our music video. We want her smoking in the music video as shown by one of the pictures in this mood board as it indicates she leads a stressful life and is stereotypical for people that lead that lifestyle and who's house and family are in the same way the main characters is within our project.

Facebook page

Facebook is a free online social networking site consisting of around 1.5 billion users. The users on this site range from around 11 to around 60, therefore anything that is put onto this site is bound to get the attention of a very wide range of people. Its free to create profiles and pages for people to like. We have created a page on Facebook for our 'Alone in this' music video, if people like our page, they will be updated with any information that we put up on there. Its important to keep people updated to keep their interest up. By regularly updating this page, we are keep our audience aware of what we are doing, where we are in our planning and production and at the end allow them to see our final production and give feedback. By creating these pages you can get opinions, idea and feedback from members of the public, as they are who we are trying to please so what they say is very important to us and our final piece. The picture in the top right is the page of the actual band we are using who are called 'The Shape of The Earth'.

Below is our Facebook page, we have titled it 'Alone In This media music video' by naming it this we have got it straight out there what it is, which allows people to instantly and clearly recognise its meaning. People who are aware of the song or the band may come across our page or search for it. We had posted on the page when we started it up to let people know what we are doing. We will continue to update this when we have finished our research and planning and actually start the production, introducing our rough cuts etc to them.

Synopsis

The main character in our music video is a girl aged 17. The girl had a back story of a violent past and present through her upbringing, her family are violent making her feel as though she is an outsider on the family. Therefore we are going to include this within the music video, and this may help the audience see why she is how she is, and why she feels the way she does. We are going to have the voice-overs in the background of shouting, slaps and arguing before the girl packs her bags, gets up and leaves. The houses furniture is very dark and simplistic to show that they aren't the most wealthy family, creating the right atmosphere that we are going for. By representing the house in such a way, people will assume that they are not the type to have disposable money for luxuries etc. The song will begin to start after the door slams which is done by the girl, as she leaves. The girl walks out carrying her belongings alongside with her where she starts her journey. Scenes that include her walking through towns and estates, travelling on a train and just trying to just get somewhere, somewhere far from home.  On her journey, she meets people, sweet people, people who make her feel not so alone, however thats difficult as she will always have that emptiness within her. This is where our message comes through, no matter where she is, whether it look likes she happy and enjoying herself, she will always be alone, with people or physically alone.

Locations and weather

Location
Our original location idea was that we wanted to record in different locations across the UK including on trains. However, we knew this would be very hard to do and also expensive, therefore in order to make this a little more possible we have decided to do it locally however we are going to try and find areas that are all near by but to the audience it will look like its in all different places over the UK, creating some sort of illusion. We are thinking about starting the music video in a house, which will be the opening location, she will then walk through an estate or crowed town. We are going to show her in all different locations, with people however mostly on her own as she is meant to be 'all alone'. We want some scenes to take place on a train as we are trying to make it seem like she travelling around a lot.

Weather
We have decided to film on different days, by doing this is wont look as though her whole journey to all of these places were filmed on one day, making it seem more realistic. By filming on different days, all shots from each day will alter because of the change in weather, whilst one day it might be raining, other days it might be quite sunny showing her travelling over a period of time creating the realism.

Equipment needed

For our music video we are going to need a variety of equipment and software in order to film and edit our final production for our music video. The first thing we are going to need is a digital camera. We were able to borrow a camcorder from the school however, just like our AS piece, we have decided to use our own bridge Fujifilm camera for a number of reasons, the quality is better, the battery life is longer and it just gives our final piece a more professional look to it. In order to ensure that our shots are straight and clear we will use a tripod. Once we have finished recording we will need to start using softwares such as; Audacity which is a recording studio with a computer programme and also Adobe Premiere Pro which is an editing software.

Examples for music video scenes

We want our music video to be quite personal, about this one girls life and how she constantly feels alone despite physically being with people or not. In order to achieve this, we thought it would be a good idea to include short clips of which she would of recorded herself on a handheld camera. We got inspiration for this from some popular pop music videos like Ellie Goulding - I Need Your Love. This involves two artists in the music video acting as a couple and using a handheld camera in order to film the more personal and fun side between them both. We will be using this to show parts of the girls life when she is with people, when she looks happy but also when she isnt, and she is alone.

Costume

For our music video we have thought about some potential costumes for our main character to wear. Above is a outfit that we as a group have put together for what we will want out main character to wear. We have chose these items of clothing for a number of reasons. The baggy clothes will emphasise the attitude of being different and not caring about what others think. When it looks as if people aren't afraid of being different, wearing what they want and trying to cover up, it stereotypes them to be quite down with themselves and maybe a little depressed. She will also be wearing a beanie, this shows how she cannot be bothered to try with her appearance and will opt for the easy way lifestyle.

Planning (main character)

We have chose someone to play the main character in our music video. We have let her know rough times of when we might need her to see if she will be free, what we will expect of her for it and how we will need her numerous of times in order for us to get it as right as possible.

Analysis of a music video

Destiny's Child // Girl

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
This music video contains a lot of charaterisitcs that a R'n'B video would, this is because it has elements that R'n'B videos do like a calm setting where the video is based, which in this video is a house. Money has been portrayed positively in this video as you see the women wearing fancy expensive dresses whilst just at home, like they need to spend that much on an item of clothing for no reason. Mnay special effects have also been used.

Lyrics and Visuals
"Take a minute girl, and come sit down and tell us what's been happening" These lyrics fit in with the visuals because at this point there are 3 girls, two already sitting at the table and one walking over who has just sat with them, and this is when one of the women say this line, they have used the lyrics to show their actual conversation. The whole song is literally a conversation the three are having at dinner, which has been made into them singing it. Ther song is based on three friends comforting their friend who is clearly having relationship problems, this is why the visuals is mostly showing the three friends together, trying to talk to her about problems, and also showing the problems one of them have with their boyfriend.

Music and Visuals
The lip-syncing is the song, is a conversation that has been made into a song. They are basically singing their parts of the conversations, to tell a story but also continue with the song.

Record Company
They use close ups on each of the singers when its their turn to talk in the conversation, times where more than one is talking, they would use a two shot, or medium shot in order to capture everyone. The video is trying to be realistic, by showing a real atmosphere, and situation of three girls going out and meeting for lunch, having a good catch up and gossip like girls do.

Frequent reference to notion of looking
The key character in this is the girl who the other two are worried about. Although the camera focuses on them all, she is what the song is directed at and is about therefore she is the focus of the song. The girls are constantly talking about her and hr relation ship to her, trying to help her, comfort her and be there. There are many close ups that show that the girls are always looking at her, as they are who they are talking too.

Intertextuality
It ends with the three girls walking away happy, with a bus with goes past with an advertisement of "Destiny's Child" who are the three girls who are in the video. It looks a bit like a movie at the end, where its a shot from the back of the girls walking, and then the camera then follows the bus that goes past.

Analysis of a music video

50 Cent // In Da Club

Music videos demonstrates genre characteristics

This video shows the elements of hip hop in terms of genre characteristics. I see this because in the video, they have used some of the typical things that hip hop videos are known or which is, the showing of the artist, which in this case in 50 Cent, there isn't really a story line to the video, and it features a lot of under-dressed women, dancing around in a club featuring alcohol.

Lyrics and Visuals
In the song, one of the main lyrics which are said in the chorus are "You can find me in the club" at this point, the camera uses a high angle shot over the whole club, showing all of the people in the club, and the artist who is slightly bigger and at the front of the shot, and he is the one these lyrics are referring to, finding 'him' in the club. Many of the lyrics refer to sex, alcohol and drugs, therefore during this video there is alcohol being shown, many women and men dancing over each other.

Music and Visuals

There are many aspects to the video which help link the music and visuals. At the beginning of the video, it shows another artist which is Eminem, it involves many different shots and angles capturing a car driving into a deserted, private building. They have used writing over the video with Foley Studio sound used over the top to emphasise the typing of the text. Throughout the video, many scenes have been sped up or slowed down in order to get the visual to match with the beat of the music. The dancing where the whole club and everyone in it is shown, you see everyone is dancing along with the beat, and moving there head along with the beat.

Record Company
Many close ups are used of 50 Cent, this is because he is the artist, and this is his song. In the lyrics, he is referring to himself, therefore many different shots are used to focus on him. He is also featured at the front of a lot of shots, with the background behind him, still showing the audience what is going on.

Frequent reference to notion of looking
In the video for In Da Club, it is made obvious that the main focus and story of the lyrics are aimed at and are about 50 Cent. 50 Cent is shown in near enough every scene, as its showing his progress from his training into become a huge star and showing when he had made it. It shows how he was in the gym a lot to focus on doing up his image, and how popular he is in the club once he had become a superstar.

Intertextuality
At the beginning of the video, they have used a layout that would be used in some sort of action or sci-fi films. They have done this by using the Foley Studio to go over the typing of the text, and this is used in films like Austin Powers. The scene then go to a laboratory  which again, is something you would expect to see in an action or sci-fi film.

Analysis of a music video

Single Ladies // Beyoncé

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
The genre of Single Ladies by Beyoncé is a hip hop/dance video, this is because it consists of the main focus on the artist, and the women dancers who are half naked just in leotards dancing. The dancing genre applies to this video because the whole video consists of women dancing in matching outfits. Beyoncé is singing in the video, along with dancing with just two other dancers. The two dancers are dressed and styled identically to Beyoncé, like she is the leader and they are her followers. They are doing the same dance as her which again adds to the idea of her being the leader. All three of them are wearing black leotards, which Beyoncé's being just slightly different as its a one shouldered, 3/4 sleeve leotard making her stand out from the others so everyone is aware she is the leader and is individual. Their hair, shoes and makeup all remain exactly the same. Beyoncé is mainly featured being in the middle of the two dancers or dancing in front of them, showing she is in charge.
Lyrics and Visuals
“If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it”
This line is in the chorus, and it is repeated over and over, this relates to the visuals that are seen on screen as there is a main prop that identifies the dancers to be different to Beyoncé which is the heavy metal glove she has on, with contains a ring. This indicates she is the one the song is talking about. This is the ring that the lyrics are referring too.
Music and Visuals
With this video being mainly dance genre related, this means that it is important that the dancing and lip-syncing is in time with the beat of the song, which it is. When the beat speeds up, so does the timing of the dance routines. The dancing becomes faster and the dancer move around a lot more around the room as the beat picks up.
Records Company
The video is mainly featured on Beyoncé, with most of the shots capturing her in particular. They have done this by ensuring she is dancing in the middle of the two dancers or is slightly in front to show she is the important one, and she is the one the song is referring too. This is the evidence to show that the focus should be on her.

Frequent reference to notion of looking
In this video it shows how Beyoncé is more superior and powerful compared to the other to identical dancers. With her being in the middle or slightly in front, it represents her being in change and the others following and copying her.

Intertextuality
At the end of the song they have a close up shot of Beyoncé with her hand up, showing off the heavy metal glove with the ring, by doing this they are showing the audience exactly what they are on about which is proposal. The other dancers are also pointing at their marriage finger, to also represent the meaning behind the song.

Analysis of a music video

Mariah Carey // Almost Home

Conventions
The song Almost Home is from a film soundtrack for Oz: The Great and Powerful, this is because it features clips of the film within the music video. The lyrics from the song have a narrative that matches to the main character of the film, which is that he is lost and he is finding his way home, this represents the "almost home" aspect. The setting of the film and the music video are quite the opposite, as in the film there's a lot of different scenery and settings throughout the clip and in the music video, it all takes place in one room, so they have made the conventions of this very opposite. However, in some aspect, the scenes link, as they have used black and white for the starting scenes of the film, and the music video for Mariah Carey's parts are black and white. Mariah may also be on about how she is 'almost home' as a symbol of her "return" to her old voice and music that viewers know, whilst this is being linked to the films physical activity of almost home. The scenes look like they link with Mariah Carey looking up at the side with her hand reaching out like she's reaching for something, and it then cuts to a scene of James Franco flying away in the hot air balloon, almost like she was reaching out for him.

Throughout the whole video, there is constant moving around, in Mariah Carey's scenes the background is still but she is always moving, whilst in the film, all scenes are very fast and dramatic showing the contrast of fast and slow movement. The lighting in the film is also changing a lot which adds to the movement looking as though it is quicker. When the movement in the film quickly increases, everything becomes faster, the songs tempo and singing gets higher and louder, and the overall scenes get quicker and more dramatic. This is done through quick cuts and fast camera movements which shows this. Mariah Carey is lip-syncing on her own throughout the whole video, like she's telling a story from her own perspective and experience of her "almost home" although she is also singing from the main character in the film's perspective. By singing on her own and being completely alone in the clips, she seems as if she is directly singing to the audience and the character, this is direct address.

Representation
Mariah Carey is singing alone in this video, meaning she is the main focus and the lead singer. Carey is wearing a long, black sophisticated dress, to add to the elegant and classy look to the film. With the film filmed in the olden days, this represents the era she is in, when women were looked at as sophisticated items. All the scenes are the beginning are in black and white which also adds to this. They use black and white on Mariah's parts, and at the beginning when the main character is at 'home', which could add to the aspect of where she is singing about. With all the women in the film dressed smartly, in long gowns, also looking very sophisticated, this links Mariah in with the films setting and props.

Audience
The target audience of this video is teenagers and older, this is because the people who are most likely to watch the film are teenagers, and adults are more likely to listen to Mariah Carey's music. Mariah Carey may be seen as a typical women, who takes pride in how she looks, and carry that elegant look. The target audience would probably like other artists like Whitney Houston and Christina Aguilera, both of these artists are older, but fit many different audience types. They would probably watch programmes like The Brit Awards and read celebrity gossip magazines. The video for this will most likely be accessed through YouTube by its audience.

Institution
The single Almost Home was released on February 19th, 2013. It was released by Island Def Jam, which is Mariah Carey's record label. The film Oz the Great and Powerful was made by Walt Disney Pictures. The purpose for this music video was to advertise the film the the audience, by showing various clips of the film, with the song adding to the powerful aspect to it, making the audience wanting to see more. This was also done to advertise and encourage people to buy the soundtrack.

How to study Music Videos

Movement
Movement is important in terms of a music video as this is want complements the songs rhythm. Doing things like the physical movement of the camera, or just having the artists and dancers in the video move adds to the movement of a music video and the editing speed. For example, Nicki Minaj ft. Cassie // The Boy. They use bright colours and fast movement when walking and dancing/jumping around to add to their excitement therefore creating the audience to become excited also. The dancing also is in time with the beat again, adding the excitement.

Narrative
Not all music videos have narrative, however some do. Narrative is usually a storyline which relates to a songs lyrics and can link the lyrics to visual. Sometimes, the narrative is very different from the song and instead it tells a story. For example, Stacy's Mom by Fountain of Wayne features narrative in which it links the lyrics with the visual. It features a young boy sitting by the pool with a girl whilst the lyrics says at this part "We can hang around by the pool".

Band/Artist
Most videos will feature the bang/artist who are singing the song or are part of the band playing in the song. This is because they are also part of the product that is being sold. They will most likely either be featuring in the video through the use of lip syncing or playing instruments. Some videos contain the artists doing some acting, to add to the storyline of the song. Some songs may even use both. Other videos may contain someone acting as the artist. For example, The Killers in Miss Atomic Bomb, who are represented as cartoons.

Intertextuality
Intertextuality is when producers are able to play around with the conventions of a well established genre of a music video. This is done by making references to other music videos but also to the genre in general. References can be obvious, whilst others are harder to find. An example of this is One Direction // One Way or Another and Justin Bieber // Beauty and a Beat, One Direction had copied the idea of using handheld cameras to capture the background and scene of whats going on.

Purpose of music video in the Digital age

The main purpose of having a music video is to sell products, its to make the product (the song) more recognisable and well known to people, which they will then buy the product as a CD or digipak. Music videos always market other products too, alongside of these. A songs music video, will be one song of a album, the song could be part of a soundtrack that the song is featured on, if an artist has any upcoming tours then this will help towards any merchandise. Music videos are rather odd, because it allows the audience to have full access of the product for free. When they listen or watch a music video, they already basically have that product, unlike other advertisements and marketing where people see how desirable a product is and therefore have to buy it in order to try it.

Following from digital age, it wasn't a problem to allow audiences to have full access to these products. They use to have specified time in which they could be shown in places, this had to be approved by the record company. Top of the Pops was a weekly TV chart countdown, and these videos would be shown and advertised on shows like this. However, in this day and age, videos still have full access, but they can now be watched whenever and wherever people want to watch them, this is because of websites like YouTube which means people can access this and the videos through the App, the Internet or mobile phones.

This then had a bit of a knock on effect on the music industry as people weren't as likely to physically buy a song copy as that would cost money, and why would people buy a CD if they could get it for free? Record companies had actually attempted to prosecute those who had uploaded videos to YouTube for copyright infringement, however monitoring this is very time consuming and costs money. Sites like YouTube have now become successful, but artist have conditions they need to obey. YouTube allows you to track how many people have viewed these videos as to see how popular they are, or at least how much people are wanting to watch them. Channels who host artists' videos offer links to iTunes, which allows people to download these tracks legally without breaking any laws. Music videos aren't the only thing you can watch on YouTube, TV shows like Britain's Got Talent and X-Factor post videos of acts on recent shows on there in case people had missed the show.

A VEVO had been launched in America for thee major record companies being; Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Abu Dhabi Media. Vevo is linked with YouTube. Google has part shares of the revenue for directing users to the official videos on music videos instead of any copyrighted ones.

Analysing Music Video's

Justin Bieber // All Around The World

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
In this video there are different elements of genre characteristics. It has dancing in, as its at a concert therefore there are throughout and learned dancing which links it to be in with dance music videos. It also links with Pop music as its fun and light-hearted and appeals to the younger audience. This song isn't at all "rock" however it has genre characteristics that rock music videos have like the artists performing on stage at a concert in front of his fan base.

Lyrics and Visuals
"All around the world, people want to be loved"
This line is the chorus of the song, and gets repeated many times, while this lyric is being sang by the artist Justin Bieber, there are clips being shown of the '7 wonders of the world', which links in that all over the world, no matter where you live, everyone wants to be loved. One of the times that they sing "all around the world", an animated Earth has been created on the computer which is then made to spin around at a faster pace.

This song is based on people being loved, no matter where they are from or live, the visuals in this video represent this, by showing people from all over the world. They also represent these lyrics by showing Justin Bieber's concerts in different places all over the world, showing that when he performs his fans feel as though he 'loves' them because of how he is giving back and performing for them, this adds to him making people all around the world feel loved.

Music and Visuals
At the beginning of the video they have filmed an aeroplane flying with the sound of its engine, this represents the music and visual as aeroplanes is a way of people travelling all over the world, from place to place. The editing and flashing lights, are fast, linking in with the fast pace of the songs beat. The dancing in the video also links in with when the beats drops and starts.

Record Company

The music video has a mixture of sightings of places in the world, and scenes from his concert. They use many different shots of Justin who is the artist, as they're showing how everything and everyone in this video is in someway or another referring to him. They show the audience all looking at him, the dancers are all dancing around him. He is the centre of this video. They could be referring to Justin Bieber as being the 'Earth' and how everyone around him at the concert are all of the people 'around the world' who want to be loved.

Frequent reference to notion of lookingIn this video it shows the popularity of the artist and performer; Justin Bieber. It shows how successful he has become, not just in the UK but all around the world and how he is performing worldwide. With this video being mainly based at a concert, all of the audience who are fans, are looking at Justin performing on stage. This shows that they are all there for him, to see him sing, dance and entertain them. There are also clips of him travelling and being in different areas, yet still there are fans around him, waiting for his appearance.

Intertextuality
At the beginning of the video they have different writing appear in different languages which represents the theme of 'all around the world' as its languages from different places. At the end it shows some sort of credits, just to say the which music company the artist is with, who is was distributed by and considering aspects of the law.

Typical conventions of a music video

History of music video's and how they have changed over time

A music video is like a short film to do with song lyrics, however, they don't always match the lyrics.

In 1926, there was the introduction of the "talkies" and many musical videos were then produced. Warner Bros. had produced Vitaphone shorts which would feature vocalists, bands and dancers. Sing-along songs which is basically karaoke, was introduced by Max Fleischer who was an animation artist. These sing-along videos were called "Screen Songs" and it used the involvement of audiences all singing along to the same song, whilst the lyrics were up for people to see.

Animated Disney films were then produced like Fantasia, this was in 1940. The video was based on the famous pieces of classical music. Moving on some years, we come to Madonna's 1985 music video for "Material Girl", this is a well-known song and music video which can be considered as a large influence on the Hollywood classical music style of videos. Michael Jackson's video for "Thriller" referred very much to the influence of the Hollywood musical dances, this brought about the style of the West Side Story which had scenes of fighting through dance.

Coming up to the late 50's, an invention of a visual jukebox had been introduced in France, followed by many short films which had been produced by French artists.

Pre-recorded music audio had come about in 1961, through a Canadian show called "Singalong Jubilee". This is when they would be on-location and film certain scenes for the short video, and would then have the artist lip sync over the top, this would then all be edited together to make it look like the artist is in these places and are singing throughout the video. In 1964, The Beatles had starred in their first featured film which was "A Hard Day's Night", this was shot in black and white and had been presented as being a mock. They had then gone on to film in colour in 1965 for their video for "Help!"

Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", they were a British rock band, and had their first album out by 1975, this was what people considered as a "real" clip of video. This was because the video had been directed and edited for the purpose of the song. More early videos are "Paperback Writer" by The Beatles, which were considered as being made for promotional reasons. Promotion videos are seen to promote the song/music to people by using videos people can remember and will recognise in years to come.

In the 1970's, a TV show called "Top of the Pops" had began to play music video however they did have a restriction on the videos they could use. Good videos would increase a song sales as the following week viewers wanted to see it again.

Music videos had started to move out and be done in all different countries, making it worldwide popular. In the US there was a video channel called "MTV", this was in 1981, it had aired the song "Video Killed the Radio Star", this channel had then opened up a whole new era of having music on television 24 hours a day. By the mid 1980's music videos were playing a key role in the music market. Peoples success had widened in this time, people like Madonna and Adam and the Ants, with their "success to the skilful construction and seductive appeal to their videos".

The development of the modern music videos were quite inexpensive and had easy used equipment for video recording and editing, the development of visual effects was created with certain techniques like image composition. High quality colour videotape recorders and portable video cameras was introduced and being used, meaning videos had become quite easy, quick and cheap to make.

Directors and musicians were then wanted to explore what they could do for these videos, looking at different styles and expanding style of genres, using new effects to their videos, mixing film with video and even some were adding a plot or storyline to their music video.

In 1983, the video for "Thriller" by Michael Jackson was released, it was a 14 minute long video which had become the most "successful, influential and iconic music videos of all time". The video set for this video had been said to of set new standards for the all music videos, being a standard of $500,000.

in 2005, it was the year of the rise of the directors, in the song credits the directors had been listed also by MTV. This helped directors to develop into new projects and become successful as a director. One of the directors was  Romanek, in 1995 he had directed two of the three most expensive videos of all time, which was Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream" and Madonna's "Bedtime Story", with the Jacksons video costing $7 million and Madonna's costing $5 million.

Now in present videos, from 2005 onwards, there are many different ways music videos are watched. They are watched online through Vevo, YouTube etc, on TV on a massive scale of music channels, on the radio and many more. YouTube was launched in 2005, making the online music video viewing for viewers easier. Some artists' fame and success has actually come from the web of YouTube, for example, Justin Bieber. Some videos can go viral purely based on the memorable video. VEVO is a music video website that also have a music channel on TV. Several music publishers had launched it in December 2009 . VEVO is linked with YouTube, and VEVO and Google sharing an advertising revenue.
